Summary |
J.S.M. (John) Ward was a spiritualist, mystic, historian and lifelong collector of antiquities. His Abbey Folk Park , begun at New Barnet, England, in 1934, was an innovative history museum where his interest in esoteric heritage, world cultures and the occult attracted much attention, but after a sensational court case in 1945 he and his followers, the Confraternity of the Kingdom of Christ, took his collection of artefacts into self-imposed exile in Cyprus. After his death, both the community and the artefact collection moved eventually to Caboolture, where a permanent museum - the Abbey Museum of Art and Architecture - was built to house them, opened in 1986. A new Abbey church was built on the Caboolture site and consecrated in 1967, and a small independent primary school, St Michaels College, was established to carry on the educational work of John Ward's Confraternity. This site now hosts Australia's largest annual medieval re-enactment tournament and festival |
