Written by the editor's youngest son, Samuel Smiles, born 7 February 1852, died 22 April 1902, and based on a journey he took between February 1869 and March 1871. It details his voyage to Melbourne and his time in Victoria, particularly at the gold diggings around Majorca (between Clunes and Maryborough), and his return voyage by the Pacific, via Sydney, Auckland, Honolulu and San Francisco, and then by rail across the Rocky Mountains to New York |
