Summary |
Bao-gun, a country hick, encounters the big city of Shanghai with the heart of a child. He first stops to visit a distant relative who invites him to stay with her in exchange for daily rent. Baogun doesn't let her know why he has come to Shanghai, but he is here to claim the grand prize of a new two-bedroom apartment won in a contest. All set to take possession of it, Bao-gun is told it won't be ready for a year and a half. He is offered cash for his prize, but the amount is much too little. He decides to stay and find a job after his parents tell him that they have already started loaning out money against the apartment's value. Bao-gun finds out very quickly that Aunty Huang is devious and a schemer, looking out only for herself and her get-rich schemes. With his aunt screaming insults at him for his naive, country ways, and treating him like a stupid child, Bao-gun nevertheless tolerates her and even protects her from creditors. Despite the nasty aunty, Bao-gun finds friends and a satisfying way to make life work for him in a city where business drives relationships, sometimes to the detriment of those wanting true friendships |
