| Summary |
Kayne and Kamil are heading to the Apple Island in the name of platypus population research, and to uncover a little known dangerous characteristic of this popular species.Tasmania was cut off from the mainland Australia by rising sea levels 10,000 years ago. With fewer introduced predators, Tasmania remains a refuge for native animals and many species that are found in Tasmania cannot be found anywhere else on Earth.Despite being found on the mainland, both the platypus and the echidna are relatively abundant in Tasmania. These are the world's last surviving monotremes and are considered an evolutionary link between reptiles and mammals. They are warm blooded, have fur and suckle their young, all like mammals. Oh, and they pee and poo from the same pipe, which Kamil will soon discover! But like reptiles, they lay eggs too.Using an ultrasound, Kayne can check whether a platypus has eggs ready to be laid.
